Driver wanted in fatal 2016 Whatcom County crash confirmed dead in Guatemala, WSP says

Luciano Ailon-Garcia was wanted after a 2016 crash that killed Georgianna James and injured another passenger.

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A man wanted in connection with a 2016 Whatcom County crash that killed passenger Georgianna James has been confirmed dead in Guatemala, according to a Wednesday release from the Washington State Patrol.

Luciano Ailon-Garcia was wanted for vehicular homicide, hit-and-run death and vehicular assault after the Aug. 28, 2016, crash on Pole Road, WSP said.

Investigators said Ailon-Garcia was driving a Ford Explorer on Pole Road about 5 a.m. when he failed to make a left-hand curve while traveling at an extremely high rate of speed.

The SUV left the road, vaulted about 80 feet and came to rest in a raspberry field.

James was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, according to WSP. A second passenger suffered fractured ribs.

WSP said Ailon-Garcia ran from the crash without providing care for the injured passenger.

A no-bail warrant was issued for him on March 21, 2017.

Ailon-Garcia later fled to Guatemala and avoided law enforcement for years, according to WSP. Investigators have since confirmed that he is dead.

James’ family has been notified, WSP said.

The agency said it is updating its Most Wanted list following the confirmation of Ailon-Garcia’s death.
