Gunfire injures teen in downtown Chelan
Around 10:20 p.m. May 23, a deputy with the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office heard gunfire near the Chelan Riverwalk Park while on patrol on nearby South Emerson Street and East Wapato Avenue. Officers responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, deputies found a 17-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower back, and performed first aid until emergency medical responders arrived. Further information about the teen’s condition is not yet available.
They were not initially able to locate the suspect, but after taking witness statements and collecting evidence at the scene, investigators concluded that the suspect was a 14-year-old Chelan resident.
That night, deputies allegedly spoke with the suspect’s parent over the phone and were able to coordinate the teen’s surrender. Law enforcement booked the suspect into the Chelan County Juvenile Justice Center on two counts of assault in the first degree.
According to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect does not attend school in either the Chelan or Manson school districts, and “investigators have received no information indicating any threat to local schools,” the department wrote on social media.
